The new Canadian Student Grants Program launched in 2009 provides an easy way for students and parents to find a grant to continue their education. Grants are available for low income families, disabled students, part time students and more.
Grants for education in Canada are provided by the Canadian Student Grants Program run by the Canadian government. It provides students in Canada financial assistance by providing grants and student loans. To be eligible you must be a Canadian citizen that’s attending a post secondary school located in Canada.
The new Canadian Students Grant Program (CSGP) is a consolidation of several government institutions to provide students and parents an easy way to find assistance using a single program. This program is designed to help students and families who need financial assistance for college. The CSGP started in 2009 and helps nearly a quarter of a million students every year get the financing they need to afford a college education.
The grant program is highlighted by the Canada Student Grant for Persons from Low-Income Families program. This program provides students from low income families $250 in assistance every month to help cover living expenses, books, tuition or anything else a student may need. This grant is available to all students in post secondary school including undergraduate, college and trade school students.
A similar program is available for students of middle income families. Students in this program will receive $100 a month to help offset the expenses associated with their education. The eligibility requirements vary based on the current cost of living in different provinces as well as the size of the family you come from.
The Canada Student Grant for Persons with Permanent Disabilities is a grant available to students who suffer from some kind of permanent disability. Students with disabilities can receive up to $2,000 per year to help pay for accommodations for the disability, tuition, books and living expenses. Students with disabilities are also eligible for an additional $8,000 per year to cover the cost of tutors, interpreters, technical aids and other costs associated with accommodating their disability in a classroom setting.
Another program that Canada offers helps parents return to school. The Canada Student Grant for Part Time Students with Dependants program offers students with one or two children $40 per week and $60 per week for parents with more than three children. This provides parents, especially single parents, the means to get the education they deserve. Part time students, including parents, may also be eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Part Time Studies program. This program offers up to $1,200 per year to cover the costs associated with school for part time students.
